Study on the Regeneration Project of the Nabão Riverbanks
The city of Tomar is strongly marked by Geography, where the Nabão river is a structural element in the structuring of the urban space, working simultaneously as an element of unity but also a barrier for urban development process.
Trying to reassert itself as a regional hub, with increasing fostering and polarization ability of populations and economic activities as a result of improved accessibility and qualification of equipment supply, Tomar attributed to the revival of Nabão’s riverbanks a strategic importance to promote and expand the attractiveness of the central area of the City, through the environmental qualification and the streamlining of its uses consistent with the functional and heritage context of this area. The Revitalization of the Nabão river, from the Açude de Pedra to Padrão, was therefore a wide-ranging strategic initiative that aimed at defining the guiding principles of the process of urban and environmental regeneration of this vital area of the City, making Tomar to be claimed as a reference due to the quality of its urban space.
The Study, of a strategic nature, had the following objectives: (i) improve the attractiveness and competitiveness of Tomar, (ii) expand the supply of leisure areas in the city centre, enhancing environmental quality and promoting greater experience of this area as a civic centre (iii) enhance the tourism image of Tomar by retraining the relationship between the Historical Centre, the Convent of Christ and the Nabão River.
